Another one suggests calling the game warden to have the bear tranquilized and relocated. But the child among them knows what is best. The Life and Works of Alfred Bestall: Illustrator of Rupert Bear $6.48 Alfred Bestall was an artist of enormous breadth and talent. As well as his celebrated "Rupert Bear" stories, his work ranged from cartoons for "Punch" to romantic, dreamy watercolors for "The Tatler." Caroline Bott spent years researching the life of her godfather, drawing on his diaries, sketchbooks, letters, and photos, all of which were bequeathed to her. In recounting his experiences in World War I and his remarkable travels to Egypt and the Middle East, the man who emerges is gentle, generous, and loved by all who met him. Abundantly illustrated with Bestall’s work, this book is an enchanting piece of pure nostalgia and a slice of time gone by. |

Bear, The $8.46 Jean-Jacques Annaud directed this unusual and compelling tale of animals in the wild, which tells its tale from the bears’ point of view. A pair of carefully-trained bruins deliver remarkably effective performances (aided by clever editing and, in some sequences, the use of realistic animated models). A infant bear cub (Douce the Bear) witnesses the death of his mother in a rockslide and is forced to set out to fend for himself. The young bear encounters a giant grizzly (Bart the Bear), who at first cannot abide the young bear’s presence. However, the grizzly is soon ambushed by a pair of hunters — Bill (Jack Wallace) and Tom (Tcheky Karyo) — after an altercation with their pack animals. As the injured beast cleans his wounds in a stream, the young bear comes to his aid, and the giant takes the youngster under his wing. However, Bill and Tom have sworn revenge on the grizzly, and when they capture the young bear, it lures the giant back into the hunters’ camp. L’Ours, released in English-speaking countries as The Bear, was based on the novel King Grizzly by James Oliver Curwood. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

A Companion To Wagner’s Parsifal $107.75 Richard Wagner’s Parsifal remains an inexhaustible yet highly controversial work. This stage consecration festival play, as the composer described it, represents the culmination of his efforts to bring medieval myth and modern music together in a dynamic relationship. Wagner’s engagement with religion–Buddhist as well as Christian–reaches a climax here, as he seeks through artistic means to rescue the essence of religion by perceiving its mythical symbols . . . according to their figurative value, enabling us to see their profound, hidden truth through idealized representation. The contributors to this collection break fresh ground in exploring the text, the music, and the reception history of Parsifal. Wagner’s borrowings-and departures-from the medieval sources of the Grail legend, Wolfram’s Parzival and Chritien’s Perceval, are considered in detail, and the tensional relation of the work to Christianity is probed. New perspectives emerge that bear on the long genesis of the text and music, its affinities to Wagner’s earlier works, particularly Tristan und Isolde, and the precise way in which the music was composed. Essays address the work’s bold, modernistic musical language and its unprecedented soundscape involving hidden choruses and other unseen sources of sound. The turbulent, astonishing, and sometimes disturbing history of Parsifal performances from 1882 until 2004 is traced in vivid detail for the first time, demonstrating the abiding fascination exerted by this uniquely challenging work of art. Contributors: Mary A. Cicora, James M. McGlathery, Ulrike Kienzle, Warren Darcy, Roger Allen. William Kinderman and Katherine Syer teach at the University of Illinois atUrbana-Champaign, and often lead study seminars during the Wagner Festival in Bayreuth, Germany. |

A Feminist Introduction to Romanticism $52.72 Elizabeth Fay’s original and lively book introduces the student to the issues most important for feminist analyses of Romantic literature. It begins with an account of key positions for mainstream and feminist scholarship in Romantic studies. Then, focusing on the issue of the canon, as raised for example by a revisory anthology such as Duncan Wu’s volume in the Blackwell Anthology series, it shows how feminist analyses can be brought to bear, radically to alter the way we read traditional canonical works.A wide variety of feminist strategies are applied to key texts, providing students with historical contexts and critical paradigms for application and development in their own work. Fay’s book shows just why we should use feminist theory and makes clear how startling the consequences of this are for Romantic literature as a whole. |

America from the Air: An Aviator’s Story $24.95 I am no helmeted, begoggled hero of the skies; picture me bookish, bespectacled, unable to hold even a teacup without rattling it. As a pilot, I am merely an amateur, and I know it…. I shouldn’t be talking. But I can’t help talking. For you take the air: the thin, substanceless air that can be made to bear a man; you take America; and you take an airplane, which of all the works of man is the nearest to a living being — you take those things and mix them up, and they will act as a drug which will knock all proper reticence right out of you. And so, here I go talking… — from America from the Air In 1927, Charles Lindbergh made his historic solo flight across the Atlantic; Amelia Earhart became the first woman to do so in 1932. And so was born the golden age of flying. Aviators became the era’s new heroes and the airplane its icon. In early 1930s Chicago, a German-born graduate student became fascinated by the airplane and its usefulness as a great geographic and sociological tool. Wolfgang Langewiesche sold his car and used his meager salary to pay for flying lessons at 25 cents a minute. With the same passion America had taken to the road a decade earlier, Langewiesche took to the air. He eagerly inhaled the landscape and breathed observations about the country, writing a series of books that describe the heady excitement and freedom of flight and the stunning views of his adopted country from an entirely new vantage point — the sky. This new edited volume revives the writings from two of his now out-of-print books. America from the Air draws from Langewiesche’s classic account of his early experiences as a pilot, I’ll Take the High Road (first published in 1939and praised by the New York Times as a stirring and revealing story, told with sensitiveness and lucidity and with the warmth of a modest personal charm ), and selections from his 1951 memoir, A Flier’s World, to create a distinctive book that provides a pioneering look at the American |

An Education Research Primer $32 With efforts to transform education into a research-based field, educators are always on the watch for research to inform educational decisions. Whether it’s for making choices about class scheduling, instructional practices, or educational interventions, educators often rely on research studies to help them determine how and why particular programs might be effective, or what really works in the classroom. But what makes for quality research? Are research claims always justified? And how can educators identify research that’s useful or relevant to their needs? Produced with the assistance of Mid-continent Research for Education and Learning (McREL), one of the nation’s foremost educational research and training organizations, An Education Research Primer gives educators a basic understanding of educational research, its guiding criteria, and its relevance to school-based decision-making. In clear and concise language the book summarizes the various types of educational research, explaining their diverse purposes and methods. For example, the difference between experimental research (studies involving control group trials) and descriptive research (based on descriptive information and relationships) isexplained, including how each is designed to address different types of research questions, and why each might have different applications. The book also describes what’s involved in setting up a comparison control group and how some studies have randomized control groups while others do not. In addition, the book describes the different types of data collection methods used in research and how this can bear on the research findings. Particular attention is given to the scientificcriteria that support the research and why this is important to educators. The book then provides step-by-step information on how to evaluate, analyze, and assess the validity of research studies, whether it is experimental research, descriptive research, or research presented in a lit |

Anton Chekhov: Longer Stories from the Last Decade $56.86 The short stories of Chekhov are an inexhaustible treasure of humanity and wisdom , wrote Elizabeth Hardwick. The whole of Russian life lies within them .Some six hundred tales bear Chekhov’s name, not a few of which are the famous long short stories written during roughly the last decade of his brief life. This volume gives us eleven of these, in eminent translations by Constance Garnett and chosen by Shelby Foote. Perhaps the most autobiographical is Three Years , which offers a portrayal of mercantile greed and exploitation that was new to Russian literature. The Duel is the story of Ivan Layevsky, a self-styled St. Petersburg Hamlet , who, filled with Tolstoyan ideas of a noble life of toil on the land, escapes (with another man’s wife) to the Caucasus. The ensuing philosophical confrontations among the major characters clearly resemble those in Uncle Vanya. And in the masterly Ward No. 6 , a doctor, disgusted by the stupidity and misery of the world of normal men, forms such a close relationship with an interesting lunatic that society declares the doctor a lunatic too and incarcerates him. The story is devastatingly symbolic of the corruption and hopelessness in Russia toward the end of the autocracy. Also included are The Black Monk , An Anonymous Story , A Woman’s Kingdom , The Wife , In the Ravine , Peasants , The Murder , and My Life . Chekhov is not only a great writer but, even rarer, a liberating one , said Susan Sontag.Shelby Foote has provided an Introduction for this edition. Art In The Cinematic Imagination $26.39 Bringing an art historical perspective to the realm of American and European film, Art in the Cinematic Imagination examines the ways in which films have used works of art and artists themselves as cinematic and narrative motifs. From the use of portraits in Vertigo to the cinematic depiction of women artists in Artemisia and Camille Claudel, Susan Felleman incorporates feminist and psychoanalytic criticism to reveal individual and collective perspectives on sex, gender, identity, commerce, and class.Probing more than twenty films from the postwar era through contemporary times, Art in the Cinematic Imagination considers a range of structurally significant art objects, artist characters, and art-world settings to explore how the medium of film can amplify, reinvent, or recontextualize the other visual arts. Fluently speaking across disciplines, Felleman’s study brings a broad array of methodologies to bear on questions such as the evolution of the Hollywood Love Goddess and the pairing of the feminine with death on screen.A persuasive approach to an engaging body of films, Art in the Cinematic Imagination illuminates a compelling and significant facet of the cinematic experience. |

A bear belongs in the woods, he says, and together with the adults clears the yards in the neighborhood of any food that would tempt the bear. Bearing True Witness $27 If proclaiming the gospel is at root a matter of telling the truth about the way things are, then Christian witnesses are paradigmatic truth-tellers. In Bearing True Witness Craig Hovey engages modern theology, philosophy, and ethics including the work of Nietzsche, Foucault, and MacIntyre to consider how Christians see, recognize, embrace, and faithfully bear witness to the truth of Jesus Christ. Hovey argues that when the church faithfully declares to the world that salvation is in Christ, that the world belongs to him, and that his works are good, it is essentially an ethical action. Moreover, he says, when Christians have the courage to speak honestly about the reality of God and divine truth, their witness becomes a force capable of challenging and overcoming worldly injustices and abuses of power. |
