Collectable Dean’s Bears Made From Goats And Alpacas!
Dean’s Bears were born from a company that started publishing children’s books in 1711. They first diversified into rag books and dolls patterns, before manufacturing their first teddy bears in 1914. Through a turbulent 20th century the company rolled with the changing fortunes of industry – stopping toy production to support the country during the second world war and seeing UK production become uncompetitive when imports from the far east became commonplace.
Since the late 1980s when the company was bought by Neil and Barbara Miller, Dean’s Bears have found themselves a special niche in the Teddy Bear world. The bears produced today are of a traditional style made with the finest quality materials.
The bears are all fully jointed – which means their arms, legs and head move with traditional cotter-pin joints. The soft fur is made from two different natural materials; mohair is the more often-used material for Dean’s bears – it comes from angora goats and is a much finer and stronger fibre than sheep’s wool, with a beautiful sheen that can also be dyed very successfully. The second quality material used for Dean’s teddy bears is alpaca. Alpacas are related to llamas but bred primarily for their excellent fibres.
The teddy bears produced by Dean’s Bears today are beautifully-detailed, strictly Limited Edition pieces. Limitations vary from just 30 to a maximum of 100 which means that many bears sell out quickly after their first appearance in Dean’s Bears’ catalogue and on the website. Most bears are designed by the Miller family, with a few exceptions which are designed by carefully-selected teddy bear artists with distinctive styles.
Dean’s Bears have established themselves over many decades as the first and finest British manufacturer of teddy bears. Their bears are sold worldwide and special editions produced, from time to time, for the international teddy bear markets of Japan and the USA. Dean’s Bears fans can join the collector’s club and receive a special edition annual bear, badge and club newsletters. Dean’s Bears are highly prized and collected worldwide – the company proudly boasts one of the largest teddy bear collectors clubs in the world – confirmation of their status as one of the best-loved teddy bear brands ever!

Art In The Cinematic Imagination $26.39 Bringing an art historical perspective to the realm of American and European film, Art in the Cinematic Imagination examines the ways in which films have used works of art and artists themselves as cinematic and narrative motifs. From the use of portraits in Vertigo to the cinematic depiction of women artists in Artemisia and Camille Claudel, Susan Felleman incorporates feminist and psychoanalytic criticism to reveal individual and collective perspectives on sex, gender, identity, commerce, and class.Probing more than twenty films from the postwar era through contemporary times, Art in the Cinematic Imagination considers a range of structurally significant art objects, artist characters, and art-world settings to explore how the medium of film can amplify, reinvent, or recontextualize the other visual arts. Fluently speaking across disciplines, Felleman’s study brings a broad array of methodologies to bear on questions such as the evolution of the Hollywood Love Goddess and the pairing of the feminine with death on screen.A persuasive approach to an engaging body of films, Art in the Cinematic Imagination illuminates a compelling and significant facet of the cinematic experience. |

In Beyond Memory: Soviet Nonconformist Photography and Photo-Related Works of Art, the general editor, Diane Neumaier, and twenty contributors offer a rigorous examination of the medium’s role in late Soviet unofficial art. Focusing on the period between the mid-1950s and the late 1980s, they explore artists’ unusually inventive and resourceful uses of photography within a highly developed Soviet dissident culture. During this time, lack of high-quality photographic materials, complimented by tremendous creative impulses, prompted artists to explore experimental photo-processes such as camera and darkroom manipulations, photomontage, and hand-coloring. Photography also took on a provocative array of forms including photo installation, artist-made samizdat (self-published) books, photo-realist painting, and many other surprising applications of the flexible medium. Beyond Memory shows how innovative conceptual moves and approaches to form and contenechoes of Soviet society’s coded communication and a Russian sense of absurdity–were common in the Soviet cultural underground. Collectively, the works in this anthology demonstrate how late-Soviet artists employed irony and invention to make positive use of difficult circumstances. In the process, the volume illuminates the multiple characters of photography itself and highlights the leading role that the medium has come to play in the international art world today. Beyond Memory stands on its own as a rigorous examination of photography’s place in late Soviet unofficial art, while also serving as a supplement to the travelingexhibition of the same title. |

Cezanne $22.95 With his distinctive paintings of landscapes, figures and still lifes. Paul Cezanne (1839-1906) profoundly influenced the Cubists and the direction of twentieth century art. In this lively account of the artist’s life and work, Mary Tompkins Lewis traces Cezanne from his early years in Alx-en-Provence, struggling to become a painter in the face of opposition from his father, through his time in Paris studying the Old Masters and working with the Impressionists, to his later, reclusive years back in Provence, when he produced the pictures than made him the precursor of a new art.But however important Cezanne’s work was for later generations, Lewis argues that it can be fully understood only in the context of both the social and historical circumstances of late nineteenth-century France, and the regional aspirations and tensions of Provence. This is the first study of Cezanne to bring biographical, formal and contextual approaches to bear on the artist’s full career. In doing so, Lewis has shed new light on Cezanne as an artist of his own time and place. |

Conversations With Chaim Potok $35.65 One of America’s most popular Jewish writers, Chaim Potok (b. 1929) is the author of such novels as The Chosen (1967), The Promise (1969), The Book of Lights (1981), and Davita’s Harp (1985). Each of his novels explores the tension between tradition and modernity, and the clash between Jewish culture and contemporary Western civilization, which he calls core-to-core culture confrontation. Although primarily known as a novelist, Potok is an ordained Conservative rabbi and a world-class Judaic scholar who has also published children’s books, theological discourses, biographies, and histories.Conversations with Chaim Potok presents interviews ranging from 1976 to 1999. Potok discusses the broad range of his writing and the deep influence of non-Jewish novels-in particular, Evelyn Waugh’s Brideshead Revisited and James Joyce’s Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man — on his work. Interviews bear witness to Potok’s many other influences — Orthodox Jewish doctrine, Freudian psychoanalytical theory, Picasso’s Guernica, and Jewish kabbalah mysticism.Though labeled an American Jewish writer, Potok argues that Flannery O’Connor should then be called an American Catholic writer and John Updike an American Protestant writer. In his mind, editor Daniel Walden writes, just as Faulkner was a writer focused on a particular place, Oxford, Mississippi, . . . so Potok’s territory was a small section of New York City. Potok often explores conflict in his writings and in his interviews. Strict Jewish teachings deem fiction an artifice and therefore unnecessary, yet since the age of sixteen Potok has been driven to write novels. At the root of all of these conversations is Potok’s intenseinterest in the turmoil between Jewish culture, religion, and tradition and what he calls Western secular humanism. As he discusses his work, he continually includes broader issues, such as the state of Jewish literature and art, pointing out with pride and enthusiasm his belief tha |

Gilbert Stuart $65 The most successful and resourceful portraitist of America’s early national period, Gilbert Stuart (1755-1828) possessed enormous natural talent, bringing his witty and irascible manner to bear on each of his works. This handsome book highlights Stuart’s achievements by presenting more than ninety portraits of exceptional quality, ranging from the early works he produced in Newport, Rhode Island, to those he executed just before his death in Boston.Carrie Rebora Barratt and Ellen G. Miles show how Stuart developed and maintained a distinctive portrait style, tailoring his portrayals to fit his subjects. They trace the development of his art from his hometown of Newport, where he proved his talent, to his years in London and Dublin, where he mastered the techniques of the English late-eighteenth-century Grand Manner, to his return to America (no longer the Colonies but now the United States), where he dealt with clients in New York, Philadelphia, Washington, and Boston. The authors provide a short essay about Stuart in each of the sites of his production, which introduces the works painted there. There is also a special section devoted to Stuart’s famous and popular portraits of Washington, the so-called Vaughan, Athenaeum, and Lansdowne portraits. These works are discussed in terms of patronage, technique, chronology, and interpretation. The most comprehensive book on the artist’s work to date, Gilbert Stuart is essential for anyone who admires American art and history. |

Hang Cool Teddy Bear $18.98 Hang Cool Teddy Bear, whose title was taken from a line in Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, is 13 tracks of classic Meat Loaf, primed and ready for the 21st century. More than four decades into his career, the man and his voice are as big, bold and relevant as ever. Meat Loaf’s creativity was sparked by working with a new collaborator, producer Rob Cavallo (Green Day, My Chemical Romance, Paramore, Fleetwood Mac), a lifelong Meat Loaf fan who has worked with some of the most explosive names in rock music and who helped to foster a modern and contemporary vibe for the album. Of their relationship, Meat Loaf said, Rob is the number one rock producer in the world because he leaves his ego out of the equation and gives an artist his voice, making it sound better than the artist could even imagine. Thematically, like most Meat Loaf albums, Hang Cool Teddy Bear has a larger concept and was inspired by a short story written by Los Angeles screenwriter, director and longtime Meat Loaf friend Kilian Kerwin. It’s the story of a soldier, revealed Meat Loaf. He’s been in battle and he’s lying face down on the ground. He can’t move, but he turns his head and starts to see blood run across the ground, and so he thinks he’s going to die. They always say you see your life flash backward when you’re about to die. But his life flashes forward – into what possibly could happen. He sees what his life could be: the good and the bad. The songs are the different scenarios he finds himself in. It’s not always the same time or the same place, but it’s always the same woman. But I don’t want to give too much away. I want people to work it out for themselves. Hang Cool Teddy Bear also features a stellar array of big-name guests, including Steve Vai (who appears on Love is Not Real ), former Queen guitarist Brian May (who appears on Song of Ma |

Illuminations of Hildegard of Bingen $20 An introduction to the life and work of Hildegard. – Reveals the life and teachings of one of the greatest female artists and intellectuals of the Western Mystical Tradition. – Contains 24 full-color illustrations by Hildegard of Bingen. – Includes commentary by Matthew Fox, author of Original Blessing (250,000 sold). Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179) was an extraordinary woman living in the Rhineland valley during most of the twelfth century. Besides being the abbess of a large and influential Benedictine abbey, she was a prominent preacher, healer, scientist, and artist. She also was a composer and theologian, writing nine books on theology, medicine, science, and physiology, as well as 70 poems and an opera. At the age of 42, she began to have visions; these were captured as 36 illuminations–24 of which are recorded in this book along with her commentaries on them. She also wrote a text describing these visions entitled Scivias (Know the Ways), now published as Hildegard of Bingen’s Mystical Visions. Author Matthew Fox has stated, If Hildegard had been a man, she would be well known as one of the greatest artists and intellectuals the world has ever seen. It is a credit to the power of the women’s movement and our times that this towering genius of Western thought is being rediscovered in her full grandeur and autonomy. Virtually unknown for more than 800 years in Western history, Hildegard was featured as one of the women in Judy Chicago’s Dinner Party in the early 1980s and published for the first time in English by Bear Company in 1982. In addition to her mystical teachings, Hildegard’s music has been performed and recorded for a new andgrowing audience. |
